MAY 2006 NEWSLETTER

The Pro's Corner

I recently had a conversation with Chad Pitts of the Iowa Golf Association about Equitable Stroke Control. The IGA and the USGA recommend that players enter their scores hole by hole. There are two major reasons for this. When a player enters his/her score hole by hole it automatically adjusts their score when they have a score too high on a particular hole. Secondly, at the end of each season the computer can generate a report identifying the most difficult holes to the easiest. This is valuable information when handicapping holes, especially when you are dealing with a new nine without any score history. The process for entering scores will remain the same except when you come to the screen to enter your score you now punch them in hole by hole rather than just entering your total.

The dates for Junior Golf have been set for the 2006 Season. The dates our June 6, 13, and 20 at Deer Run Driving Range and June 27 and July 11 at Indianola Country Club. Please visit the web site for a printable sign up form or you may pick one up in the Clubhouse. Joining the staff this year will be Alex Schenfeld who is an Assistant Golf Professional at Echo Valley Country Club and Coach Mike Sheil who is the Indianola Boy’s Golf Coach.

The Pro Shop is beginning to take shape now that inventory is arriving. Please take a moment to stop in and see what your Pro Shop has to offer. Men’s and Women’s logo apparel along with logo hats should be arriving soon. Remember, if we don’t have what your looking for let us know. We have the capability to special order most anything your golf game needs! Don’t forget that an Indianola Country Club shirt would make for a great Mother’s Day gift.

New Cartshed Planned

With the cartshed waiting list fast approaching 30 the board is planning to build a new shed if we can get enough members to prepay cart shed dues to pay for the construction. This is the way the club has funded the last few sheds. For those currently not in a shed the cost is $1,100 for the remainder of this year and the following four years, 2007-2010. If you are currently in a shed you can pay for the four additional years of 2007-2010 for $900 and stay in your current spot if you wish. The club reserves the right to limit the number of prepayments to the amount needed to build the shed. The deadline for this is May 5th. This is a great opportunity for a new member to join and get a cart shed space right away!

Restroom/Shelter

The Restroom on the west 9 is almost complete. There is a small amount of plumbing to be completed and the electric service needs to be hooked up. It should be open soon. Joe is working on a landscape plan to include the "memorial bricks" members have purchased to help pay for the facility. Bricks are still available for $100 each in the clubhouse. Spring is Joe's especially busy time so please be patient for the installation of the bricks and landscaping.

May Tournaments

The Mothers Day Tournament is on Sunday May 14th. The Mother/Son or Mother/Daughter teams will play a modified alternate shot format. The nine hole division (no entry fee or prizes) will start at 8:00 AM with the 18 hole division starting at around 10:30 AM. Please sign up by Friday May 12th.
The State 2-Person Best Shot on Sunday May 21st is a new tournament this year. This is open to both members and nonmembers so sign up early. This is a great opportunity to invite a guest to play.
The Memorial Day Tournament will have a 9:00 AM shotgun start on Monday May 29th. This is a four person best shot tournament with an A, B, C, and D player. Teams are picked by the tournament committee. Sign-up by Friday May 26th. A GHIN Handicap is required for participation.

Women's Golf Association News

The last Stagette of the season is on Wednesday May 17th, don't miss it. Looking ahead, the Ladies Invitational is on Saturday June 3rd. This 2-gal best shot is open to both members and nonmembers so sign up early. Women's Golf League will start on Wednesday June 7th.

Couples 2-Ball Events

Saturday 2-Ball events begin in May with a 6:00 PM start on Saturday May 27th. Come on out and join the fun. Since we now have 18 holes, the nine not being used by 2-Ball is open for others to play.

Tuesday Night Golf

Tuesday Night Men's League starts on May 16th. We want to make it clear that the COURSE IS OPEN TO OTHERS on Tuesday nights, although the first and 10th tees will typically be crowded from about 4:30 PM until about 5:45 PM. With the course playing as east nine and west nine on Tuesdays, both tees are usually wide open by about 6:00PM. Also, food is typically available on the outside grill on Tuesdays during Men's League. This is open to all, not just those in league, so come on out and grab a bite and play some golf.

Indianola High School Girls Golf

The IHS Girls team is practicing and playing at the club again this spring. Many of the girls on the team are members. They have matches at 3:30 pm on Friday May 5th and Monday May 8th. Please support team in their efforts, and plan your play to avoid conflicts.

A Long List of Reminders:

  • Sign-in and Pair up - All members and guests should sign in before teeing off. Also, if you are a single or twosome, pair up and form a threesome or foursome during busy times.

  • 2006 Calendar/Bag Tags - The 2006 Club Calendars and Bag Tags are in. Pick yours up in the clubhouse if you have not done so already.

  • GHIN Handicaps - To activate your GHIN Handicap you will need to pay the $20 fee in the clubhouse. A GHIN Handicap is required for some of the club tournaments. Check the calendar for details.

  • By-Law Change - Remember that last year the Board approved a change in the by-laws to allow children who have been under a family membership to join the club with no initiation fee provided they do so within three months of when they become ineligible to remain on the family membership due to graduation etc. If you have any children graduating this spring, I hope they will take advantage of this opportunity.

  • East - West on Tuesdays - Remember that on Tuesdays only the East (old) nine is played as the front nine and the West (new) nine is played as the back nine. There is as East-West score card available. This is to allow Tuesday Men's League to start on both nines and clear the course for use by others.

  • "Crossing Over" - The option to 'cross over' from hole #1 to #11 to play just the old east nine (on days other than Tuesday) is available only if you can do so without interfering with players going from #10 to #11. You do NOT alternate in. On weekends or Thursday afternoons when play is steady you should not expect to be able to cross over. For more details please consult the "Handbook" section of the calendar.
