APRIL 2006 NEWSLETTER

The Pro's Corner

With the 2006 golf season fast approaching I thought it would be a good time to discuss golf handicaps. One of the most important things when a player establishes a handicap is to play by the rules. One thing I notice with the “casual” game is that players often will just drop a ball in the fairway when they either hit it Out of Bounds or simply lose their ball. Also, it’s important to play the Hazards the way they are marked and under the rules. How many times have you seen a particular group or person “slap” back the 3 foot gimmie? In time these practices catch up with you and your handicap. Two players of the same skill level can have drastic differences in their handicaps based which set of rules they play by. Do they play by the rules of golf or do they play by their rules? A player who consistently plays the ball down will have a higher handicap than the player who moves it. In my opinion, this adds up to 4 - 6 shots for the average golfer in an 18 hole round. Another thing that I notice is that not every golfer understands Equitable Stroke Control or your ESC Score. Based on your handicap there is a maximum score that one is allowed to have on any particular hole. Below is the chart for ESC.

Handicap
0 - 9
10 - 19
20 - 29
30 - 39
40 & above

Maximum Score Allowed
Double Bogey
7
8
9
40 & above 10

What does this mean? If I’m carrying a 14 handicap and I shoot 88 yet I have two bad holes in which I record 8’s I must enter an 86 in the computer even though I shot 88. According to the chart with a 14 handicap the maximum score I’m allowed to have on a hole is a 7. Please remember that golf is a game of integrity. It is up to us to play by the rules. If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask me. Many of us have no idea how to take relief from a Lateral Hazard. This is why when we play in a tournament and shoot a significantly higher score a lot of the reason for this is because now were having to play by the rules and or play the ball down when were not used to playing this way. A question that I’m asked on a regular basis is: "Why is it my handicap has not gone up when I've been playing so poorly?" The system stores your last 20 scores in it's memory and uses only the low 10 to formulate your current handicap. I hope this helps answers some of the questions about handicaps that come up during the golfing season.

Club to Host 2006 Indianola Chamber Golf Outing

The Board has approved the club hosting the Indianola Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing on Wednesday June 14th. The Board felt that this was an excellent way to promote our club with the members of Indianola business community, many of whom have not played the course since we expanded to 18 holes. Since this event falls on a Wednesday (Ladies Day), the Board felt it would be equitable if the course was open to all on the other weekdays that week. There will be no Men's League that Tuesday and Thursday afternoon will be open to all instead of men only. Some special events are in the planning stages and we hope you will all come out and support the club during what we are calling "Open Golf Week".

Women's Association Salad Luncheon

The Annual "Secretary's Day" Salad Luncheon will be on Wednesday April 27th in the clubhouse. All are welcome so if you are in town come on out with your coworkers for lunch. This is a Women's Association fundraiser.

This is open to both members and nonmembers so invite your friends. Men(white tees) and women (red tees) will all play in the same division which will be flighted. Long Range Planning Committee

The Long Range Planning Committee had its first meeting on March 21st and will meet again on April 17th. The committee is beginning by making a list of the potential issues facing the club and ideas for projects the club should undertake. If you have an issue/idea for the committee to consider, let someone on the committee know. The committee consists of Trustees, Board members, representatives from the Men's and Women's Associations and several members at large. The committee members are Mike Blake (chair), Ron Hood, Rochelle Stout, Werner Kolln, Paul Breuklander, Rob Curtiss, Mike Lathrop, Kevin Halterman, Bob Lester, Dennis Hosey, Wayne Karstens, Dick Mathews, Ron Bright, and Dave Brown. Joe Burke and Jason Marvelli also attend the meetings.

GHIN Handicaps

With the golf season now underway, remember that you must pay your GHIN Fee to activate your handicap account. The cost is $20 for the year. The increase was needed to update the handicap computer. You can pay this fee in the clubhouse. This is not a mandatory fee, but a GHIN handicap is required for participation in some club events. Check the schedule in the calendar for details.

New Member Recruiting

The spring is traditionally the time we bring in the most new members. Our best source of new members is you, the current members. As the weather improves, now is the time to bring out your friends who play golf and are potential members. The initiation fee is currently only $250 and you will get $50 in clubhouse bucks for each new member you can recruit. We had over 30 new members join last spring. If we can do that again this year we will have a great year. If you would like us to send information to a potential member, fill out the form at the end of this newsletter.

Membership Changes

Troy Coffey has converted from a social to a golf member. We have received resignations from Jack & Madelene Lane and Jake and Jessica Espenmiller. We now have 309 golf and 11 social memberships.
