May 2004 Newsletter

Back-Nine News
The new nine is growing in well. The greens have been top dressed and mowed several times. The fairways and tees are also being mowed. If you haven't toured the new nine recently you should check it out. It is really starting to look good. At its next meeting the Board will discuss how to best integrate the new holes with the current 9 when the new nine opens.

Shelter/Restroom Fundraising
The Spring Fling Dance raised over $1,000 for the shelter/restroom facility planned for the new nine. At the dance "Build a House Campaign" to raise additional funds was announced. The club will sell "memorial" bricks to be displayed in a sidewalk/patio area outside the facility. The cost is $100 per brick. You can have up to 3 lines of printing on the brick. Sample bricks are available in the clubhouse. The sale of bricks raised $2,100 at the dance and the total from brick sales is now $2,800. Pledge forms for the purchase of bricks are available in the clubhouse.

Cart Shed News
Because of the increased waiting list for cart shed spaces, the club is exploring the option of building a 24 space addition onto one of the sheds. As in the past, this would be financed by having members pay for cart shed spaces in advance. ($1,000 for 5 years or $2,000 for 11 years) Since there are fewer than 24 on the list we would offer this opportunity to lock in cart shed fees to any members who come forward until we have the funds needed for the shed. If you have a current space you could, but would not have to move. Call Paul Breuklander at 961-2652 if you are interested in this.

Friday Night Dinner in May
The last Friday night dinner was a success. Another one, catered by Country Club Catering, is planned for Friday May 7th from 6:30pm-8:00pm. The menu is a 12 oz. Rib Eye for $15 or an Iowa Chop for $12. Reservations are required. Call the club at 961-3303. Come on out and support your club.

Handicaps
The club pays for each person on the USGA GHIN computer handicap system. Persons who have not turned in many scores may have been made "inactive". You can ask Jason to activate your "account" if this has happened to you and you need the handicap for tournaments or other reasons. The system has been changed so that the club has 18 hole instead of 9 hole handicaps. You can enter 18 or nine hole scores. The computer will then pair your nine hole scores. You will also notice that hole-by-hole scores are not required. You just enter your "equitable stroke control" score. Details are posted by the computer.

Golf Tournaments
The tournament season starts in earnest this month. The Mother's Day Tournament is on Sunday May 9th and the Memorial Day Tournament on Monday May 31st. Check for details in the May Club Activities section of this newsletter. Advance sign-up is required so be sure to check out the sign-up book in the clubhouse or call Jason at 961-3303. There are also Couples 2-Balls on Saturday May 15th and Saturday May 22nd. 2-Balls start at 6 pm. Come on out and join the fun.
Looking ahead to June, don't forget the Ladies Invitational on Saturday June 5th. This is an 18 hole 2-gal best shot tournament open to both members and nonmembers. The cost is $40 per person with lunch and prizes included. Contact Melissa Hosey at 961-5201.

Indianola High School Girls Golf
The IHS Girls team is practicing and playing at the club again this spring. Many of the girls on the team are members. They have matches at 3:30 pm on May 4th and 11th. Please support them in their efforts and plan your play to avoid conflicts.

Junior Golf
Junior golf will start on June 8th and NOT on June 1st as originally announced. The other dates are June 22nd, June 29th, July 6th, and July 13th. Advanced sign-up by May 31st is required so that the juniors can be divided into approximately equal size groups by age. Sessions will start at 7:30 am, 8:45 am or 10:00am. You will be called to let you know what time your junior golfers should be there. The lead instructors this year are PGA Professional Jason Marvelli and PGA Professional Shane Marvelli. Golfers between the ages of 8 and 17 are welcome to participate in Junior Golf. The cost for this professional group instruction will be only $25 for members and $75 for nonmembers. Sign-up sheets are available in the clubhouse. If you have questions call Jason Marvelli at 961-3303.

Calendars and Bag Tags
The 2004 calendars are in. Pick yours up in the clubhouse. I'm sure it is not error free so let us know if you find any errors so corrections can be made. This will be a transition year as we expand to 18 holes. There are likely to be changes throughout the year so be sure to check the monthly newsletters or the website for changes and updates. 2004 Bag tags are also available in the clubhouse. We have the ability to put your name on the bag tag. Be sure to ask if you would like this done. We will keep the same junior bag tags as last year, red for 10 and under, blue for 11 to 15 years old and green for 16 and 17 years old. If your junior has changed categories pick up the new color bag tag for them.

A note from the Indianola Community Foundation:
Last year we held our annual golf tournament at the Indianola Country Club. Our Board of Directors would like to thank the club and its members for their continued support of the Foundation in this fund-raising activity.
Our tournament this year will be held June 28, beginning with sign-in at 11:30, followed by a 12:30 shotgun start. This is an 18-hole, 4-person best-shot event. The cost is $260 per team ($65 per person). Proceeds from this fun tournament will be used to meet local match requirements for a state grant to establish a community betterment endowment fund.
In the past, members have donated the use of their golf carts as a way of supporting this event. It is our hope that enough members will again offer their carts so that we can fill the needs of all the teams in the tournament. If you would be willing to donate the use of your cart, please contact me at 962-9348 or Jack Mayer at 961-6363. Thank you for continuing to make this a successful event.
