MAY 2009 INDIANOLA COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER

Pro’s Corner
Tournament season is just around the corner so this seems like a good time to remind all of you about the 2009 Indianola Country Club Member - Guest.  Last year the event was a huge success and we hope this year’s tournament is even better.  For those of you who are not familiar with this event a Member – Guest Tournament is your chance to “showcase” your facility to a non member.  The format for this year’s tournament will be a 2 – Person Best Ball Net.  You will be counting the low ball/score of the two after applying your handicap.  Each player in the field will need a handicap.  All players will be competing within the same flight regardless of sex.  Because this is a net event all players should be competing on a level playing field.  Men will play from Men’s Tees and Ladies will play from the Red Tees.  Members are allowed to play with multiple guests.  If this is the case you will be paying a discounted entry fee for every team after your first team.  Our tee gift this year will be a $50 Gift Card to Callaway Golf.  A Callaway representative will be on hand Saturday morning of this event to explain how you partake in the Callaway Shopping Spree.  One change for this year is that we will be having the Member – Guest dinner the evening before our tournament.  Our hope is that you will take advantage of this opportunity by inviting your spouse or close friends for an evening out at the Club.  Please look for more information in the upcoming weeks.  For now, mark your calendar because you won’t want to miss out on this event!

Junior Golf Reminder
As warmer weather is approaching so is summer.  With summer comes Junior Golf Camp.  Mark your calendars for this year’s 2009 Junior Golf Camp.  The dates for this year’s classes are Monday, June 22nd - Friday, June 26th.   Please look for more information and sign up forms in the next few weeks.  Sign up forms will be available on line at www.indianolacountryclub.com or at the Club.  You may also send me an e mail at iccpgapro@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to send you the form.

Creek Crossings Update
The Board has received several bids so far for bridges.  The low bid was higher than expected and the Greens Committee is continuing to explore options for the creek crossings.  The current plan is to make needed improvements to the current crossings to keep them safe during the golf season and to replace the crossing by number 8 green this fall.  Funding for this would come from the Capital Improvement Fund which has over $30,000 in it now with more being added each month. The board has also recently refinanced the clubs loan at a lower interest rate and has decided to put the over $1,000 per month savings from the lower payments into the Capital Improvement Fund to be used for the crossings and other needed improvements.

Women’s Association News

Couples 2-Balls
There are two couples 2-balls, in addition to the Spring Fling, scheduled for May.  They are Saturday May 16th and Saturday May 30th.  Start time is 6 p.m.  Come on out and join the fun.  Reminder: the nine not being used by 2-Ball is open for others to play.

From the Men’s Association
Hi everyone. The Men's Association has been busy planning for the 2009 season. We have several things in the works. Our first weekly golf game for association members will start on May 4th. Jason will play a round and post his score in the clubhouse. There will be an envelope with a numbered sign-up sheet at the bar. You will put your $5 in the envelope and take the score card from the envelope that coincides with your sign-up sheet number. Play your round and have your card signed by a member you played with. The game will be open Monday through Saturday. I'll pick up the cards and apply your handicaps to your score on Sunday. If your score with handicap beats the pro, you win! Enter as many times as you like. Winners will be notified via email and winnings will be deposited into winner's clubhouse accounts. Again, only Men's Association members with current handicaps may enter (unless you’re playing Jason scratch). There is still plenty of time to join ICCMA if you want to play. All money raised by ICCMA goes back to the club for projects. Bar TVs, replacement windows and contributing to the kitchen remodel are just a few examples of how ICCMA member's money is spent. Come join us and join the fun.

Volunteer for the Principal Charity Classic
The Indianola Country Club will again provide marshals for hole #5 at the Principal Charity Classic.  To volunteer you should contact John Friest(681-1403) or Steve Saylor (321-2395) or get on www.principalcharityclassic.com and register online. Just note that you would like to be a hole 5 marshal with ICC.  Once again it costs $75 to volunteer.  Contact John or Steve if you have questions.

From the Greens Committee:
The weather is warming up and Joe and his staff have the course rounding into great condition.  We are already seeing evidence of people practicing on several holes.  Practice is an integral part of playing better golf, especially in the Spring.  Our lack of a driving range forces us to use the golf course for these types of practice sessions.  We encourage you to take advantage of this when you can, but please observe proper golf etiquette when doing so.

  • Make sure you are not interfering with someone who is playing the course.  Find an opening that will give you the time and space you need yet prevent you from disrupting others.  If someone does come up on you while practicing, yield to the person playing the course.  They have the right of way.
  • If you take divots in the fairway or rough, replace those divots, or better yet, fill them with divot mix.  If you need to order a divot mix bottle for your cart, see Jason. Divot mix is available near the clubhouse and on the par 3 tee boxes.
  • If you are hitting shots into a green, repair all ball marks.  Unrepaired or improperly repaired ball marks result in greens that can be bumpy and aesthetically unpleasing.

These rules apply to your time playing the golf course as well.  Help keep the course in the best shape it can be for all of our members.  Contact a member of the Greens Committee with questions or comments (Mike Lathrop, Dave Button, Cory Drees).  Thank you.
